What Hail Damage to Your Roof Costs You in Calgary

Usually your deductible, plus any upgrade you choose

Standard home insurance covers hail and wind damage (Insurance Bureau of Canada). Your insurer decides what is covered, the deductible and any depreciation.

Why Calgary prices look like this

  1. Calgary storms are expensive

The June 13, 2020 storm caused almost $1.2 billion in insured damage and the August 5, 2024 storm about $2.8 to $3 billion, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

  2. Door-to-door offers after every storm

The IBC advises confirming who a contractor is, who they work for and whether your insurer referred them. A roofer who takes a deposit must hold a prepaid contracting licence, and you can cancel a contract signed at your door within 10 days of receiving your copy.

  3. A deductible is not negotiable through a roofer

A roofer offering to cover or waive your deductible is a warning sign. Ask your insurer.

Red flags in a hail damage quote

  • An offer to pay or waive your deductible
  • A contract signed before your adjuster has seen the roof
  • A contractor who asks you to sign over your claim
  • "Your roof qualifies for a free replacement" from someone at the door

Before any deposit: ask for the roofer's Alberta prepaid contracting licence (Service Alberta's online lookup) and a WCB-Alberta clearance letter, and get the contract in writing.
